‘Valuing’ your life

Speaking of values – this week I had an interesting experience that really put mine to the test.

A potential client reached out, looking for counselling services. I was excited! I always love meeting new clients and the sense of possibility that comes with beginning that work together. And, to be honest, I was also excited because my client load has been a little lighter these past few months, and rebuilding it has been a priority. I do this work because I love it – but let’s face it, it also helps to pay the bills.

As we went through the consultation process, though, I realized something important. While I could work with this person, for a variety of reasons, she would likely be better served by another counsellor. My heart sank. The disappointment was real.

Over the past few months, as I’ve been refining my brand and preparing to launch the professional speaking side of my business, I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on my core values. I identified my number one value as integrity – with accountability as its loyal sidekick. To me, integrity means doing the right thing, even when it’s hard.

In this case, that meant letting go of ego. Letting go of the fear of financial insecurity. Letting go of a new client – by referring her to a trusted colleague.

The value of knowing and living my values is beyond measure. They serve as a touchstone, guiding every decision and action I take. And that feeling – of acting in alignment with my values – feels like a strengthening from within. It feels good. It feels right.

Integrity. Trust. Wellness. Laughter. Positivity. Continuous learning.

These are my values. I commit to living and working within them – always. And if I ever fall short, I invite you to call me out.

Today, I invite you to reflect on your own values. How do you live them, day to day?
